Snowfall recorded in Galesburg, Surrounding Communities
updated 9:16 a-m, 4/6/09 The calendar says it's early spring, but after a system brought rain, snow and sleet to the area, it appeared very much like winter.

Trained weather spotters reported between 1.5 and a little over 2 inches of snow in Galesburg, and the Abingdon and Altona areas late Sunday night. The National Weather Service predicted rain, sleet and snow for the area Sunday, although about an inch of accumulation was expected.

Measurements included 1.5 inches with snow still coming down in Galesburg at 10:15 Sunday night. Altona had received 1.7 inches by 9:40 p-m and another report noted 2.1 inches of snow and poor visibility about a mile north of Abingdon on Route 41.

Totals around the area varied - less than an inch to more than 2 inches. Chicago was supposed to get hit with 5 or so inches of snow. Reports Monday morning indicated the city received 3 inches, with more in the forecast during the day. That prompted the postponement of the Chicago White Sox opening day baseball game against Kansas City at U-S Cellular Field.

Meteorologists say most parts of the state will see sporadic rain and snow showers on Monday, but with little to no accumulations in most places. A warm-up of sorts begins Tuesday, when the sun returns and the temperature climbs into the 40s.
