Abingdon Clerk Re-elected, A New Look City Council in May
Two new faces and two former aldermen will be joining the Abingdon City Council while the incumbent clerk won easily.

Abingdon voters reelected clerk Sheila Day. Day defeated challenger Nikki Stranger by garnering 69 percent of the vote (637-281 votes).

Four-year seats up for election on the city council were won by former aldermen Jason Johnson in Ward 3, Dean Edmonson in Ward 4, along with newcomers Shane Peterson in Ward 1 and Delores Johnson in Ward 2. Delores Johnson was involved in the closest race, defeating challenger Eric Baker by just 7 votes.

Incumbents Mike Boggs (Ward 3) and Dean Fairbank (Ward 1) lost in their bids to serve again on the council. Boggs was seeking re-election and Fairbank hoped to serve another term after being appointed by outgoing Mayor Steve Darmer.

There are still two-year seats to appoint to the city council by new mayor Roger Stegall, so the candidates who didn't win the four-year seats could return based on what Stegall decides.

Many current aldermen decided to not run again. They are Rich Slagle, Melissa Johnson - wife of Jason Johnson - Dale Schisler, and Bambi Cogagen. Aldermen Ronnie Steele and Myron Hovind remain on the council because their terms weren't up yet.
