Highest Vote Totals in Galesburg Ward 6 Election
Plenty of attention was paid to other races on the Galesburg City Council in Tuesday's election -- but the one that garnered the most attention, if you are looking at vote totals, was in the sixth ward.

Incumbent Wayne Allen soundly defeated newcomer and former radio news reporter Joni McGarry by about a two-to-one margin. But Allen's 519 votes and McGarry's 333 votes were more than any other aldermanic candidate in any other race got -- in some cases, more than the two candidates running combined.

You'd think that would be the sort of thing Allen would want to celebrate, right?

"I'm not going to celebrate," Allen said. "The voters chose me to represent them for another four years in Ward 6. And instead of celebrating, we need to start getting to work."

Allen told WGIL among those things he wants to work in include formulating a new economic development plan, something that's being worked on now with the Galesburg community visioning sessions. He says that will always be at the top of his list.

When asked if he felt he could work with new mayor Sal Garza, Allen said he did.

McGarry, meanwhile, has said she's thankful for the votes she did get, and may or may not run for office again someday.
