U of I Extension Cutting Jobs, Closing Offices
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- The University of Illinois Extension Service will eliminate 46 county directors' jobs, close a dozen offices and cut more jobs over the next 15 months as it prepares for state budget cuts.

Extension spokesman Gary Beaumont says the service's $65.3 million budget would be cut by $5.56 million under Gov. Pat Quinn's proposed state budget.

Beaumont says it's too early to say how many jobs will be cut in a process he expects will be wrapped up by July 2011.

Some of the county director positions being cut are vacant and some people losing jobs may qualify for buyouts. Other non-managerial jobs are expected to be cut later.

Beaumont says the cuts are based on input from extension users gathered at recent meetings.
