Edgar Wants Income Tax Hike
CHICAGO (AP) -- Former Republican Gov. Jim Edgar is giving a boost to Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn's proposal to raise the state income tax.

Edgar says the state can't fix its budget mess without a tax increase. The state faces a $13 billion budget deficit.

The Republican candidate for governor, state Sen. Bill Brady of Bloomington, is campaigning on a pledge not to raise taxes.

Edgar has previously called Brady's plan to make a sweeping 10 percent budget cut "naive" and Thursday he said Brady needed to "flush out his budget policies."

Edgar's remarks to an audience at Elmhurst College were reported by the Daily Herald.

Quinn is looking to win a full term after being elevated from lieutenant governor to replace ousted Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
