Group Cites Victory for Clean Car Standards
The Environmental Law and Policy Center says a decade-long fight has now been won. The center is referring to new federal clean car standards, announced by the Obama Administration, which will require an average of fuel efficiency of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016.

Howard Learner, ELPC executive director, says these standards will drive innovation, and says car manufacturers are already pushing to roll out more efficient vehicles. He also predicts that car makers will lower prices on hybrid vehicles once more people are buying them.

Learner says the announcement is symbolic of a win-win-win for Americans, because more efficient vehicles will reduce the country's reliance on foreign oil, stimulate jobs, and reduce pollution. However, auto dealers are not pleased, saying the new standards will mean cars will become too expensive for many people.
