Lawmakers Propose Requiring Paid Sick Leave
You wouldn't want to eat a restaurant meal some worker has sneezed on. But if you are a small business owner, you wouldn't want people calling in sick when they really just want to sleep in.

State lawmakers are trying to work out those two concerns in a bill to require employers to grant paid sick leave. State Rep. Lisa Hernandez (D-Cicero) is the sponsor of a bill putting the number at seven days per year. Business groups say while people shouldn't come in when they are contagious, business owners don't always like government mandates.

The owner of a popular Springfield water park, Doug Knight, says his family business is generous and compassionate with employees, but at the same time does not want teenage employees abusing a policy by lying about being sick.

People on both sides of the issue seemed amenable to a compromise if there is a law about paid sick leave. Hernandez acknowledges that especially during the current economic crisis, her bill is not ready for a vote.
