GOP Remap Plan Gets All the Debate, but Democratic Plan Moves On
No one testified in support of a Democratic-sponsored redistricting plan, but several people at least want the ruling Democrats to slow down.

During a more than four-hour hearing Monday, eight people sat down at the witness table and either supported a Republican-sponsored plan, or asked that some compromise made.

Andy Shaw, executive director of the Better Government Association, prefers the Republican plan, which is being touted by the League of Women Voters. While he conceded that no plan is perfect, he says the plan to have a separate commission re-draw the map should be given a chance.

C W Chan, chairman of the Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community in Chicago, however, just wants fairness. He says the last redistricting process chopped the Asian-American community among several legislative districts, which he says weakens that community's voice. The committee spent nearly all of the hearing debating the GOP-supported plan, then quickly passed the Democratic plan, which now goes to the full Senate.
