Education Funding Advocaters Speak at Capitol
People wanting more money for public education in Illinois brought their case to the Capitol Tuesday -- but the vice chair of the House Appropriations for Elementary and Secondary Education Committee says it's not a case of preaching to the choir. State Rep. Will Davis (D-Homewood) says he believes his colleagues in wealthier areas are content to take care of their own districts and preserve their political careers, rather than take a risky vote on an income tax increase.

Davis said he believes K-12 education in Illinois is a story of the "haves" and "have-nots," saying of the first group, "I don't really think they just give a damn." He also asked one advocate -- the past president of a special-needs parents' group -- if he’d vote out a lawmaker who voted for a tax increase. The parent, Rich Zabelski of Chicago, said no -- as long as he was assured the extra money would go toward education.
