Giannoulias Defends Fundraising Total
CHICAGO (AP) -- Democrat Alexi Giannoulias is defending his latest fundraising total even though he lagged behind his GOP opponent by $1 million in the race for President Barack Obama's old U.S. Senate seat.

Giannoulias said Wednesday he's proud of his best fundraising quarter. He also says he knew raising money would be harder when he pledged not to take cash from federal lobbyists and corporate PACs. He also had a hotly contested primary, unlike Congressman Mark Kirk, who didn't have a serious challenger in the Republican primary.

Giannoulias raised $1.2 million in the first three months of the year, while Kirk raised $2.2 million.

Giannoulias also has been saddled with the political liability of his family's troubled bank. Chicago-based Broadway Bank could be on the verge of collapse if it doesn't raise new money before the end of the month.
