U of I, SIU Presidents Speak at Capitol
University presidents tried to put a positive spin on what's happening, despite the ongoing financial crisis, when they appeared Thursday before an Illinois House appropriations committee.

Lawmakers welcomed back Stanley Ikenberry, who led the University of Illinois from 1979-95 and is back as interim president following an admissions scandal.

He and his Southern Illinois University counterpart, Glenn Poshard, said they are having to deal with financial stresses that include Gov. Pat Quinn's proposed 6.2 percent cut in state funding.

Ikenberry told representatives Illinois has a bright future but must prepare to cut expenses and increase revenues. Poshard said he is pleased the SIU School of Medicine is finally about to open the Simmons Cancer Institute in Springfield -- built two years ago but still not open because of the state's lack of money.
