College Officials Say Map Funding Almost Gone
A state program that has had seen its trouble in recent years thanks to the ongoing budget crisis is apparently in even more trouble this year.

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission says grant money under the Monetary Award Program, or MAP, is expected to run out no later than Monday.

Carl Sandburg College Financial Aid Director Lisa Hanson tells W-G-I-L that means what usually is a lazy day might end up being a day full of paperwork if you have a child about to enter college.

"We want to encourage anybody who's thinking about going to college next year to get their financial aid applications in," Hanson said. "You apply online and as soon as you submit the form then you've met their deadline, so families who are thinking about going to college: have those applications in over the weekend then they can get state funding as well as federal aid."

Hanson says the college will still hold a workshop for parents and prospective college students on how to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, Tuesday night, but she says in order to have a shot at MAP grant money, applying this weekend is still a better idea.

The application, and help, are both available online.
