Corn Planting Surges Ahead
The corn crop numbers look much better than they did last year.

According to the weekly crop report, farmers across Illinois now have 34 percent of the corn crop planted, compared to one percent last year and the 12 percent five-year average.

Jim Rapp, Princeton, has planted more than half of his 2,100 hundred acres of corn. He says he's relieved to have good planting weather and soil conditions, and is even hoping for some rain by the weekend because the remaining fields may quickly become too dry for planting.

Jeff Scates, Shawneetown, and his family have more than half the corn crop in the ground. He says he's not taking anything for granted, and won't celebrate until the end of harvest, but says during his career, this crop has the best potential, and that the only other year he can remember with close to as good a start did turn out with a high yield.

One percent of the state's soybean crop has been planted, compared to last year's zero.
