State Program Added to "Most Endangered List"
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- A group dedicated to saving historic Illinois buildings warns that budget cuts are decimating a program that helps revitalize downtown business districts.

The group has even placed the Main Street Illinois program on its annual list of the state's most endangered historic sites.

Landmarks Illinois said Tuesday that the Main Street program has helped dozens of communities preserve decaying downtowns. The group says it has created thousands of jobs and millions of dollars worth of investment.

But budget cuts mean the Main Street program has largely stopped giving cities advice and technical assistance. The national Main Street organization has suspended the Illinois program because it's not meeting proper standards.
