Abingdon Approves 2010-2011 Spending Plan
The city of Abingdon is prepared for the new fiscal year now that aldermen have approved the budget.

The city council, after little discussion Monday night, approved the budget with a 6-0 vote. Aldermen Jason Johnson and Diane Johnson were not at the meeting.

Alderman Myron Hovind presented the $2.6 million spending plan that includes cuts to the water and sewer budgets. Hovind says the new budget appears to be much larger than this year's, but it's actually a little bit smaller.

"The normal budget for the year, out of that, is...$1,871,185," Hovind said. "The extra is just grants and things that we'll do if the money comes in. But, we have to appropriate it all."

The grants include money not yet received from the state to tear down several dilapidated buildings in the downtown area and for other proposed projects.

The new budget is about $30,000 less compared to this year's spending plan. The FY 2010-11 spending plan's projected revenues of $1.7 million leaves a deficit of about $172,000.

The city council also approved allocating $120,000 in Motor Fuel Tax money for this year's road repairs in town. Officials say more work is needed than that but it can't be done this year because money is tight.
