Thousands Rally in Springfield
State officials estimate around 12,000 people rallied in Springfield Wednesday for an income tax increase and to call for a balanced state budget.

The Responsible Budget Coalition organized the rally, busing people in from all over the state. The group supports House Bill 174, which would raise income taxes and other taxes to help fill a $13 billion state budget deficit.

The people marched around the state Capitol and then into the building to address lawmakers directly. Many of the participants represented education and health care organizations, social service providers and unions.

The group says the people of the state are hurting, but that is why a tax increase is needed. Members believe increased revenue will ensure people continue to receive the services and education they need.
