Students are Mad at U of I
University of Illinois students upset about rising tuition, increased administrative expenses, budget cuts, and a lack of state money have found a sympathetic ear in that of State Sen. Martin Sandoval (D-Chicago). He says he will chair a subcommittee that would subpoena university administrators to account for their decision making on such matters. The panel would look at containing costs and lowering tuition at all state universities.

Sandoval says it's ridiculous that the university continues to plan on a nearly ten percent tuition increase.

Shawn Murray, a member of the student government at the university's Chicago campus, wants public hearings into how the U of I makes decisions about tuition increases. He says, "It's unfortunate that students have to be here today, acting as lobbyists, when we're not the ones who make the decision." He accused university leaders of waiting for their next cocktail party when they should be accountable to students.
