Free Rides for Seniors Continues
All senior citizens will continue to get free mass transit rides. A bill to end free rides from some seniors failed to pass out of the Senate Executive Committee Wednesday.

Senate Minority Leader Christine Rodogno (R-Lemont) sponsored the measure. She says the bill makes common sense and that people who can afford to pay for transit services should. HB 4654 would require a means test for seniors wanting free rides. Only seniors that qualify for the circuit breaker program could receive the free rides. All other seniors would pay half price.

State Sen. Ricky Hendon (D-Chicago) voted against the bill in committee. He said the current economic conditions make it the worst time to scale back necessary services.

The bill failed to pass the committee by a 6-7 vote, despite support from Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago).
