Quinn Claims Brady is Using Independent Contractors
Gov. Pat Quinn is concerned that his Republican opponent in the race for governor is using misclassified independent contractors.

Quinn says everyone should take a close look at those working for the campaign of State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) after Crain's Chicago Business reported that many Republicans seeking office have hired independent contractors to act as press aides and staff, leaving the individual, not the campaign, responsible for tax liability for Social Security and Medicare.

"I think we need to hear about this," Quinn said. "I think that's part of maybe disclosing everything about your finances. How in the world do you have only independent contractors as opposed to employees in your campaign or in your business?"

Although one can call themselves an independent contractor and the employer can do the same, Illinois law sets the parameters.

Crain's points out that many Democrats seeking office have put their staffers on the payroll and are paying their portion of the employee's income tax. An independent contractor is responsible for both the employer's and employee's share of payroll taxes.

Brady was expected to speak with reporters in Chicago Thursday where the matter was expected to come up.
