"Step Afrika" Steps Onto WIU Campus
Step Afrika, the first professional company worldwide dedicated to stepping, marches into Western Illinois University for a 7 p.m. Monday, April 5 performance in the University Union Heritage Room.

Stepping is a unique dance tradition created by African American college students. The body is used as an instrument to create intricate rhythms and sounds through a combination of footsteps, claps and spoken word, says the Step Afrika web site (www.stepafrika.com).

The professional company Step Afrika, founded in 1994 and based in Washington, D.C., reaches tens of thousands of Americans each year and has performed on stages across the world. They have been featured on CNN, BET, PBS and NPR along with books, documentaries and articles that explore the tradition of stepping. Each year Step Afrika completes a 50-city tour of American colleges and universities. The company is a model for the use of stepping in educational setting, promoting themes such as teamwork, academic achievement and cross-cultural understanding.

The event is open free to the public and is sponsored by the Black Student Association, University Union Board, Greek Life, the Visiting Lectures Committee and the Council on Student Activities Fund. For more information, contact the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center, phone (309) 298-2220, or visit their web site at www.gbcc.wiu.edu.
