Brady's Tax Returns Show Business Hardships
The Republican hoping to move into the Illinois Governor's Mansion next year took some bumps and bruises in his home building business.

State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) had his staff made tax returns available dating to 2004 -- but only to reporters willing to come to a Springfield campaign office and take notes.

While Brady and his wife, Nancy, reported an adjusted gross income of about $550,000 for 2004 and 2005, it was $-116,679 in 2008. Last year's was $119,910. The Bradys did not have to pay federal or state income taxes in the loss year, and a lawyer, Jason Barickman, said the federal stimulus package included provisions by which Brady could roll some of the 2008 loss into 2009. Thus, Brady also paid no federal income taxes last year.

Brady's business interests accounted for losses of about $80,000 last year and $400,000 the year before.

Charitable contributions totaled $16,744 in 2009 and $8,298 in 2008.
