Illinois Boaters Urged to Wear Life Jackets
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is urging boaters to wear life jackets as the spring and summer boating season begins.

The department says that the theme of the National Safe Boating Council's campaign is "Wear It!" The campaign encourages the use of life jackets. Illinois officials also are encouraging boaters to stay sober and be alert to others on the water.

Statistics from the department's Office of Law Enforcement show 102 boating accidents on Illinois waters last year. Those accidents resulted in 25 fatalities and 71 injuries. Illinois law requires a boat or watercraft to have a life jacket available for each person aboard.
