Sun Bear Euthanized at Bloomington Zoo
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) -- Keepers at Bloomington's Miller Park Zoo say they have euthanized one of the zoo's two Malayan sun bears because of a serious illness.

Zoo Superintendent Jay Tetzloff says three veterinarians evaluated Chapin the bear earlier this week and determined he had a bone tumor in his left forearm.

Tetzloff says Chapin was 27 years old and among the oldest sun bears in captivity. A sun bear's average life span is about 25 years old with some living until their mid-30s.

Chapin and a female bear named Candy, arrived at the zoo in 1998 from the Memphis Zoo as a breeding pair. Tetzloff added that the zoo is monitoring the 26-year-old Candy closely because the bears had been together for so long.
