Official: Scott Lee Cohen to Run for Governor
CHICAGO (AP) -- A spokesman for the Illinois house speaker says disgraced former lieutenant governor nominee Scott Lee Cohen plans to run for governor.

Steve Brown says Cohen told House Speaker Michael Madigan April 17 of his intention to run as an independent candidate. Brown is Madigan's spokesman.

Brown says Madigan told pawnbroker Cohen he would support the Democratic ticket.

Cohen won the Feb. 2 Democratic primary to share the ticket with Gov. Pat Quinn, but he quit days later after it became widely known that he had been accused of abusing his ex-wife and was arrested in 2005 for holding a knife to the throat of an ex-girlfriend. Cohen has denied the allegations, and charges stemming from his arrest were dropped when the girlfriend did not show up in court.
