Lawmakers Want to Exterminate Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are a common problem in Illinois, but state lawmakers hope to change that. State Sen. Heather Steans (D-Chicago) is sponsoring legislation to create a task force against bed bugs.

The bill creates a Pest Control Advisory Council subcommittee to bring members together with pest control experts to address the problem. Steans says the committee would be temporary and would be repealed by Jan. 1, 2012.

Steans says the bugs are difficult to exterminate because no one product has high success rates, and the bed bugs usually come back. Steans adds that the critters aren't just a problem in the bedroom, but can infest an entire building.

State Sen. Dave Syverson (R- Rockford) supported the bill in committee. He joked future generations may not need to warn children about beg bugs if the group is successful.

H.B. 6439 unanimously passed the Senate Public Health Committee. It now heads the full Senate for final approval.
