Crop Progress Continues at Fever Pitch
Illinois farmers have 73 percent of the corn crop planted. That's the highest percent recorded for planting at this time of year, ahead of the 67 percent planted by this week in 2005. Last year at this time, 4 percent of corn was planted. The five-year average for corn is 28 percent.

Corn planting more than doubled over the last week. Last week, 34 percent of the expect corn crop was in the ground.

Even rain couldn't slow down farmers last week. Farmers had less than five suitable days for field work, but still welcomed the rain showers. USDA crop statistician Mark Schleusener says some farmers were forced to stop planting because the soil was too dry and the seeds had to be put too deep into the ground.

Farmers also made some progress with soybeans. Last week, farmers had planed 5 percent of soybeans, compared to the five-year average of 1 percent for this time of year. In 2009, 1 percent of soybeans were planted. Oat planting is nearly complete with 91 percent planted.
