Groups Offer Prison Reform Ideas
CHICAGO (AP) -- Several Prison reform advocates want to reinstate two early release programs Gov. Pat Quinn halted last year.

Chicago attorney Jean Maclean Snyder Monday told an Illinois House committee hearing on curbing recidivism that early release programs decrease crime and save money. But she says they're not without risk.

Rep. Karen Yarbrough says they were stopped because of politics before the primary.

More than 1,700 inmates, hundreds of them violent, were released from prison after as little as three weeks behind bars in a program known as "MGT Push." Additionally, 233 nonviolent inmates were released under another program.

Quinn halted both after The Associated Press reported the existence of MGT Push.

Corrections Director Michael Randle says the programs are under review.
