School Bias Task Force Tussels With Time
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- An Illinois Senate task force to study racial bias in school discipline is supposed to submit its report on Saturday, but has just gotten started.

The panel was spurred by an Associated Press analysis last November that showed suspensions of black students have escalated 75 percent in the past decade, while those of white students dropped 5 percent.

But members have met informally only twice while they awaited appointments by Gov. Pat Quinn.

Quinn made the appointments Friday, after he was asked about them by the AP.

A March 12 Senate resolution creating the task force called for a report by May 1st. But several task force members say the panel will have to continue work on the complex subject past that deadline.
