Courthouse Repair Pricetag: $2.5 Million
It's going to cost Knox County a lot of money to make all the repairs two firms say are needed to the Knox County Courthouse if it wants to stay there.

The Knox County Board's Building Committee learned Monday night that Galesburg-based Johnson Building Systems and Iowa-based architectural firm Durrant have presented a proposal to have Johnson manage the construction aspect of the project, and Durrant do the design work.

Johnson Building Systems C.E.O. Paul Johnson says the firms will start by coming up with three sets of options for work the county can do.

"One was renovation and addition to the Courthouse," Johnson said, "renovation and offsite offices for non-judicial services, an estimate to put a proposal together for the courthouse plus maintenance and renovation work that needs to occur soon on the existing courthouse."

That study, Johnson says, would cost about $44,000, but a number of other repairs and the two firms' fees would bring the total cost to $2.5 million.

They say work needed immediately includes replacement of plumbing, heating, and electrical systems, parts of which they say are either obsoltete or nearing the end of their useful life.

The Knox County Board will see the proposal in full at their meeting Wednesday night, before taking a final vote on the partnership, but that voters in November would ultimately decide what will happen.
