Report: Illinois Has Among Bumpiest U.S. Roads
CHICAGO (AP) -- Transportation officials dispute the findings of a new report that says Illinois has among the nation's roughest roads.

The report released by U.S. PIRG says Illinois has the nation's 10th roughest roads, with 57 percent in less-than-good condition.

The group also says Illinois has about 2,300 structurally deficient bridges, but spends more on building new or wider highways. Illinois PIRG's Brian Imus likens that to adding a guest room when your roof's leaking.

But Illinois Department of Transportation spokeswoman Marisa Kollias says the findings are based on 2008 data. She says the state's made major improvements since then. She also points to a new $12.8 billion highway-improvement plan where more money's set aside for repairs.

Kollias adds that winter wear on roads in northern states can make comparing road systems unfair.
