Cedar Creek Cleanup Saturday
What has become an annual event to get a part of Galesburg cleaned up as part of an observance of sorts of "Earth Day" is taking place Saturday morning.

The Galesburg-Area Chamber of Commerce's Environmental Task Force and the Knox County Soil and Water Conservation District are hosting a cleanup of Cedar Creek starting around 9am Saturday. It was delayed a week because of bad weather last week.

KCSWD Resource Conservationist Kara Downin tells WGIL volunteers will focus on a part of the creek where a lot of junk accumulates.

"This is where the concrete embankment stops," Downin said. "All the debris and the brush that is there -- it kind of traps all the trash that has gone through the city. It just kind of accumulates. That's where we're going to be cleaning -- on both sides of the bank."

Downin says you might be surprised how much junk and debris can pile up at that end of Cedar Creek. She says 2,200 pounds of primarily wet, heavier garbage was picked up there last year alone.

Downin says anyone looking to take part in the Cedar Creek cleanup needs to meet in the parking lot of NAEIR on McClure Street before 9am Saturday, and would be advised to wear gloves, boots, and possibly long sleeved-shirts and long pants.
