Recorder Accused of Theft May Make Plea
POSTED 3:46pm 4/5/10 The Knox County elected official accused of stealing from the political party she was involved with may make a plea in the case soon.

Records at the Knox County Courthouse indicate Knox County Recorder Paula Monzo is scheduled to be in court April 28th to make a plea.

Monzo was in court last Tuesday for a re-arraignment hearing on charges accusing her of Theft Over Three-Hundred Dollars. She allegedly stole $3,500 in funds from the checking account of the Knox County Democratic Central Committee over a one-year period ending last November, while she served as the party's treasurer.

Police reports allege Monzo would write checks either to herself or to "Cash", and also had an allegedly unauthorized ATM card on the account.

Monzo reportedly told authorities she was having trouble paying bills, and also had a cocaine habit.

Monzo is being represented by public defender Karl Johnson, while Chuck Zalar was appointed special prosecutor in the case.

Monzo has continued to serve as recorder throughout the proceedings.
