1st Weekly Crop Report Published
It's a sure sign of spring: Baseball is under way, and so is corn planting.

There is a little bit of corn in the ground, though not yet enough to total 1 percent of the year's expected acreage, according to the year's first weekly USDA crop progress report.

Crop statistician Mark Scleusener says the corn that has been planted is mostly along rivers in sandy soil that drains well.

Half of Illinois' corn fields have adequate moisture, half have excess, but Schleusener says the last week has been good for drying, with warm sunny, windy weather, so fields are getting into good shape for planting.

The oat crop advanced over the past week from 4 percent planted to 45 percent.
