Former Police Officer Charged With Theft Appears in Court
ORIGINALLY POSTED 10:50am 4/7/10 The now-former Galesburg Police lieutenant accused of stealing has made a court appearance in the case, but details still aren't being publicly disclosed.

Warren Anthony Riley made his first appearance in court Wednesday morning with his counsel, attorney John Rehn. Riley faces charges of Theft Over Three-Hundred Dollars and Official Misconduct, but waived a reading of those charges in court, and also waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

Riley was arrested March fifth after turning himself in, and was released from custody after posting 10-percent of $20,000 bond. He resigned the day before.

Chuck Zalar has been appointed special prosecutor in the case, and told Judge Paul Mangieri he may have to amend one of the charges, but that it should be done within the week.

Meantime, Freedom of Information Act requests for information surrounding the case filed by WGIL and other media outlets have been repeatedly denied. One WGIL filed and was denied by the city is under review by the Illinois Attorney General's Office. They've asked the city to explain why not providing the arrest report would obstruct an ongoing criminal investigation, and to provide them with that report.

Riley will be arraigned April 28th.
