The "People's Mansion" Needs the State's Help
Gov. Pat Quinn calls it the people's mansion, but the building is in need of major repairs.

The Illinois Executive Mansion has not been updated in 40 years, says curator Dave Bourland. He estimates it would cost $12 million to repair the 155-year-old home and install new heating and air conditioning systems.

Bourland says money for major repairs has not been available because the legislature, prior to 2009, had not passed a capital bill in 10 years. He says the mansion needs a new roof and elevator.

At times the mansion is without hot water, but Gov. Pat Quinn doesn't seem to mind. He has proposed a budget of only $75,000 for repairs to the mansion for Fiscal Year 2011. Bourland hopes that number will grow before a budget is passed. He says otherwise the proposed funds would be only a drop in the bucket for what is needed.
