Knox-Rootabaga Jazz Festival Underway
An annual festival of jazz music hosted in part by Knox College is officially underway.

This marks the 30th year for the Knox-Rootabaga Jazz Festival which runs Thursday through Saturday. Organizer Nikki Malley says jazz is seeing somewhat of a resurgence, even though she says she has to try to convince some people every year who have never heard jazz music before to try it once.

Malley tells WGIL she knew she had to do something special for this year's 30th anniversary of the festival -- and really, it's what the people want.

"Why not bring back some of the favorite guest artists that have been part of our 30-year history," Malley said. "The audience members are very vocal with me about who they love, and the people that we have coming this year are the people who, probably, are the most requested guests. That was kind of a no-brainer."

Malley says that will be in addition to Knox's alumni big band, and the Knox Faculty and Friends combo, as usual. But she says this year, Knoxville native and jazz drummer Matt Wilson will perform with his quartet Saturday night at the Orpheum Theatre.

Malley says Wilson has been doing educational outreach and doing other community events throughout the week.
