Work Starts Saturday for High Speed Rail Tracks
CHICAGO (AP) -- Amtrak says 96 miles of tracks and a quarter-million railroad ties are being installed starting Saturday in central Illinois for future high-speed rail service.

The work will take place from Elkhart, north of Springfield, to Dwight. It means chartered buses will be used for some Lincoln Service trains for several weeks and a detour for Texas Eagle trains between Chicago and St. Louis.

The improved track is to allow Amtrak trains to travel up to 110 miles an hour, up from the current maximum of 79 miles per hour.

State transportation officials anticipate that track between Dwight and Pontiac will be ready for faster service next year.
