Health Department Holds Car Seat Checks
National Public Health week ended Friday for the Knox County Health Department.

This year's theme was safety and so the department held a car seat safety check.

State Police Trooper Jason Wilson was on hand to help ensure car seats were properly used in people's cars.

Wilson tells WGIL, a majority of people do not know the proper way to install a car seat and there a number of rules and laws to follow.

"What the advantage is for me is I can also inform them of some of the laws that are out there because there are so many complicated occupant restraint laws so it's a good idea to have a law enforcement officer there just to not enforce the law at this time, this is an educational process. So we're out there to hopefully educate the public to where they understand why it's important to have a child in a car seat and to correctly have their child in that seat."

Six people stopped Friday to have car seats checked, and none were in compliance, however all were easily fixed.

If you missed the chance to have your car seat checked, the Quad Cities Safe Kids organization holds seat checks every Saturday at local fire departments.
