9 Shuttered Visitors Centers Reopen
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Nine of 15 Illinois visitor centers have reopened after they were closed last year while state officials reviewed the budget.

he State Journal-Register reports that nine centers reopened Friday and a tenth center is to reopen later in April. About 20 staffers have been hired and they will be open Thursday through Sunday. The centers closed July 1.

Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity spokeswoman Marcelyn Love says they were closed while officials reviewed the budget.

She says state officials estimate the center could have brought in an additional $45 million in tourism dollars if they had remained open.
