Columbus Day Waiver Gets Public Hearing
The Galesburg School District is sending students to school on another day they used to get off, but they want to make sure the public sounds off on the idea first.

The District 205 School Board Monday night is holding a public hearing on the administration's change requiring school on Columbus Day.

A 2009 change in state law allows school districts essentially more leeway in the holidays students do and don't get. Previously, districts had to petition the state for school on certain holidays. Now, they simply have to hold a public hearing on the matter, and they have to ensure that educational activities are held honoring the person whom the holiday is for.

In this case, school would be session on Columbus Day, and the district would essentially have to create a curriculum for the day honoring Columbus.

The public hearing is scheduled for 6:55 Monday night at Lincoln School. Monday's board meeting is the last full meeting for Deborah Harrison and Doctor Carl Strauch, who are stepping down and did not seek another term, and for Gloria Osborn, who was defeated in last Tuesday's election.
