Report Outlines Illinois Options on Pension Debt
URBANA, Ill. (AP) -- A new report says borrowing to cover Illinois' pension payments is unsustainable and will affect the state's long-term financial health.

The University of Illinois Institute of Government and Public Affairs released the report Monday.

The report notes that Illinois has the worst underfunded pension system in the nation. The state's unfunded pension liability was estimated at more than $79 billion last year.

The report outlines the state's options. They include raising taxes, cutting spending or reneging on its past promises to employees.

U of I's Institute of Government and Public Affairs conducts and disseminates research on public policy issues affecting state and local government.
