Alternative School Showing Big Results
Officials in the Galesburg School District continue to sing the praises of just how much success their new alternative high school has seen in just a short period of time.

The school, known as Galesburg High School North, has only been operating for two years, but outgoing principal Wes Olson says enrollment has doubled, and the district's overall graduation rate has increased, while the dropout rate decreases.

Olson told the District 205 School Board Monday night there are several reasons for why the school works.

"The board had gave us tremendous facilities at Rose Hoben Welch, and that building I can't tell you the number of people I've talked to that say 'I went to elementary,' or 'I went to preschool here,' there's a number of people involved with that building always impressed when come into it and how it has changed in a positive way but we work to establish a positive school climate and build relationships, that's been an number one goal, we know that had to be our number one goal to reengage at-risk youth."

In a video the board saw, several students all said one thing has motivated them to succeed at GHS North, the family atmosphere they feel they're a part of, which they claim isn't so much true at normal high school.

The vast majority of students in GHS North came from Galesburg High School, while a smaller percentage were dropouts.
