IL Officials: Tips to Prepare for Earthquakes
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois officials are offering tips to prepare for the worst during Earthquake Preparedness Month.

Jonathon Monken is director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. He says a few simple, inexpensive tips can save money and prevent injury.

Tips include bolting bookcases to walls and securing TVs, computers and other appliances, bracing or replacing masonry chimneys; avoiding hanging mirrors or heavy objects over beds; blocking rollers on big appliances and knowing how and when to shut off utilities.

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake shook southeastern Illinois in April 2008.
IEMA offers an ``Earthquake Home Hazard Hunt'' on the web.
