Lawmakers Against Two Gun Bills
(IRN)-A couple of bills to control the purchase and movement of guns in Illinois failed in the House.

One, sponsored by State Representative Will Burns (D-Chicago), would restrict purchases to one gun per person per month. State Rep. Roger Eddy (R-Hutsonville) pointed out that for people who own and use guns illegally, it would be just another law to ignore.

The other, sponsored by State Rep. Edward Acevedo (D-Chicago), would require people whose guns are stolen to report the theft within 72 hours. State Rep. Ron Stephens (R-Greenville) opposed both bills on Second Amendment grounds and said people who want to infringe on his right to own a gun should pass a Constitutional amendment to do so.

Both bills failed to pass. Acevedo used a parliamentary maneuver to reserve the right to call his again. Burns – who is leaving the legislature soon for the Chicago City Council, did not.

HB 1855 (report gun thefts) has failed in the House, 50-66, though the sponsor reserves the right to call it again.

HB 203 (one gun per month) has failed in the House, 47-68.
