New Illinois State Police Director
(IRN)-The Illinois Senate has confirmed a new director for the Illinois State Police; his nomination went more smoothly than the governor's last choice.

Senators unanimously approved the appointment of Hiram Grau, a police officer of many years in Chicago. The governor's last choice, Jonathon Monken, was not well received because of his age and lack of police experience. Monken was never confirmed.

Grau says he's confident he'll relate to constituencies Downstate, even though he has spent nearly his entire career in Chicago. "You can live in a big city, you can live in a small county, a rural area, but people are people," he says. "They have the same emotions, and they deal with the same problems that most people deal with."

Grau says he'll look for creative ways to tackle the budget, including implementation of strictly monitoring department resources. However, he's not sold on forcing highway troopers to turn their engines off for 15 minutes every hour to save gas, an idea recently floated in appropriations committees.
