Slight Decrease for Jobless Rate in April
(IRN)-Unemployment in Illinois continues to fall, slowly.

Unemployment in Illinois is 8.8 percent, a drop of 1/10th of 1 percent over the last month, as the state gained 1,700 jobs, it was announced Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

University of Illinois economist Fred Giertz says this is a slow decline. "The recession's been over not quite two years now and still the unemployment rate is much, much higher than it has been during this stage of a recovery," he said. "It's down from the 10 percent range down below 9 percent, but that's still very high compared to three years ago or four year ago when we were in the 5 or 6 percent range."

The number of people unemployed dropped by 6,200, with 582,100 people still out of work. Both the unemployment rate and the number of people unemployed have dropped for 14 months in a row. The current unemployment rate is the lowest since February 2009 when it was 8.6 percent.
