Galesburg Considers Reducing Number of Precincts
You may be voting in a different precinct or even ward in the next election if you live in Galesburg.

The Galesburg Election Commission held a special meeting Thursday to discuss preliminary redistricting maps for the city.

Because voter turnout has been somewhat low in the past, 13 percent in last week's election, Commissioner Bills Butts says fewer precincts may be the way to go.

"We're talking about proposing a change from 31 to 24 in the city of Galesburg, from an argument point there's come economical reasons to do tat, to consider that, and that's fairly obvious that perhaps leads to a reduction of the existing polling places, but in any event that's down the road after the map is adopted."

Butts adds that it would be more economical, and eliminate precincts like 16, which had just two voters in the last election.

Having 24 instead of 31, however, who also equate to about 800 voters per precinct and Steve Buck, a member of the local Democratic Party that attended the meeting, argues state statue says it should be 600 voters per precinct.
