Home on Galesburg's North Side Damaged by Fire
A Galesburg home sustained damage Friday evening after a fire that officials believe started simply enough in the home's fireplace.

Galesburg Fire Battalion Chief Todd Peterson says the blaze at the home of Doctor Daniel Sherwood in the 2200 block of Christopher Drive started around 7:30 Friday evening and was brought under control within about 10 minutes after they arrived, with flames immediately shooting through the roof.

Peterson tells WGIL the accidental blaze started in the home's fire place, and proved to be not easy to get out.

"It took a little bit to get [the fire] knocked," Peterson said. "There was quite a bit of fire up there, and gotten into the attic space. [The firefighters] did a really good job of getting in there and getting the fire put out. It took a little bit to get it under control."

Peterson says the fire was unusual in that the home is newer, and firefighters just don't have a lot of those to put out.

Fire damaged was contained to the home's second floor and attic area, with smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the home.

Sherwood and his family got out of the home safely and were not hurt.
