AG Madigan Sues Company for Selling Deeds
CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is alleging in a lawsuit that a man deceived people to whom he sold deeds to their homes.

In a news release, Madigan's office says the mailings in which Neil Camenker of Camarillo, Calif., offered to sell homeowners copies of their deeds for $87 violated the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Practices Act. She said homeowners were not notified that deeds are also available for a small free from their county recorder's office.

Last month, Iowa's attorney general announced Camenker's company, State Record Retrieval Board, had been engaged in the same practice there and that it had agreed to stop.

A phone number for Camenker could not be found.
