Fire Alarm Bill Passes Full House Vote
State Representative of the 74th district Don Moffitt had success with a couple bills passing out of the Illinois House this week.

One requires hotels and motels to not only have fire alarm systems installed but ensure the alarms are properly maintained.

Moffitt tells WGIL the bill was introduced based on a fatal fire in Galesburg, but the hotel could not be held liable.

"When we had the tragedy in Galesburg, I believe it was in 2009, they had smoke detectors, but they were non-functioning," said Moffitt. "When State's Attorney John Pepmeyer went to bring charges, they had not violated a law. The detectors were there. It's just that they were non-functioning. This says it is their responsibility. They are to be inspected. They are to be maintained."

If the fire systems are not properly maintained, hotels and motels could face a penalty.

The bill passed the unanimously and now heads to the Senate where Peoria Republican Darin LaHood will carry the measure.

He will also carry another of Moffitt's bills that passed this week related to paramedics NOT being required to draw blood for criminal evidence purposes.
